Italdesign for Volkswagen

The relationship between Italdesign and Volkswagen dates back to the 1970s.  Over the years, the two companies have worked together to create some of the most iconic and influential vehicles, and since 2010 our partnership continues as part of the Volkswagen-Audi Group.

Since their first collaboration in 1973, Italdesign and Volkswagen have developed a series of landmark cars that have shaped the brand’s identity and set new standards in the automotive world. This partnership continues to inspire cutting-edge design and technological advancements.

1973

Volkswagen Passat

The Passat was Italdesign’s first project with Volkswagen, introducing a sleek, modern design that quickly became a global success. The collaboration proved to be a commercial triumph, with over 2 million units produced in both sedan and station wagon versions.

1974

Volkswagen Scirocco

A stylish and sporty coupé, the Scirocco brought dynamic design and performance to the forefront of Volkswagen’s lineup. Elegant and essential, the Scirocco is the first production car to have a door that flaps on the sides.

Volkswagen Golf

Italdesign’s work on the Golf transformed the segment of compact cars, creating an enduring icon that remains one of the world’s best-selling vehicles, with over 6 million units sold just between 1974 to 1983. It’s still in production and has reached the 8th generation.

1997

W12 Project

The first W12 was the Project, a mid-engine Volkswagen sports car, able to accommodate a 12-cylinder engine in a W configuration and to be configured with Volkswagen’s Syncro all-wheel drive. It proved to the world Volkswagen can build supercars and large and reliable engines for its flagship car models. In 1998 the W12 Roadster, an open-top version combining striking design with high-performance engineering.  The 2001-2002 evolutions beat all global speed records, covering a distance of 7740.576 km at an average speed of 322.891 km/h.

2003

Volkswagen Tarek

Created for Volkswagen’s racing program, the Tarek was a sports car designed specifically for rally competitions, debuting in the Paris-Dakar race. With a lightweight tubular chassis and a carbon fiber body, it was engineered for extreme performance in challenging conditions.
